A few years ago, it was difficult to find synthetic motor oils, and equally difficult to find someone who admitted to using them. Nowadays, however, you can find these items on the shelves of Wal-Mart, and other retailers, and the number of people turning to synthetic motor oils, particularly in light of the recent events affecting fuel prices, has risen greatly.

So why do people choose synthetic, or man-made, motor oils rather than sticking with the old petroleum based stand-bys which are admittedly cheaper?

1. Let’s start with the cost per quart issue. Synthetic motor oils ARE more expensive at purchase. However, these oils last longer, requiring fewer oil changes. As a synthetic motor oil outlasts several changes of petroleum based lubricants, the ultimate out-of-pocket cost of the lubricant is less. This cost savings becomes even greater if you have someone else change your oil for you rather than doing it yourself!

2. They also have a higher initial viscosity index and less viscosity breakdown as compared to conventional lubricants. They also have more uniformly sized molecules. This means that over the period of life of the oil, more lubrication, hence less heat and more protection is being provided to the engine. In other words, longer engine life.

3. Petroleum based oils may contain ingredients not found in synthetic motor oils. These ingredients often have nothing to do with the lubrication of the engine, but exist simply because it is too expensive or too complicated to remove them. The breakdown of these ingredients can result in sludge and other contamination. This not only affects the performance of the engine and its components, but contributes to pollution as well. While petroleum based lubricants are, as the words imply, “refined” from a “crude” product, there is a certain level of variability of product as well. Man made motor oils, on the other hand, are engineered to be of consistent quality. Additionally, they can be designed for specific purposes. For example, synthetic varieties can be found for the family car, race cars, motorcycles, chain saws, and diesel trucks.

4. Because of their ability to lubricate better and last longer, synthetic motor oils help your engine operate more efficiently and easily, therefore requiring less fuel to accomplish a given amount of work. This is money in your pocket, and, since the benefits of the oil’s effectiveness extend longer, this is the gift that keeps on giving.

5. Regular use of synthetic motor oil means lower maintenance costs across the board, not just in terms of the oil changes themselves. Engines and engine components simply tend to last longer. It has long been known that one of the most important acts a car owner could perform to prolong the life of his or her car while lowering overall maintenance costs was to perform regular oil changes. When a synthetic process motor oil is used and changed on a regular schedule, the synergistic affect of lower lubrication costs, plus lower fuel costs, plus lower maintenance costs, plus longer engine and component life adds up to a tidy amount, not to mention the sales or trade value of the vehicle that has been kept in this manner.

6. Due to the lack of ingredients such as wax or paraffin, which may be found in conventional oils, synthetic motor oils begin flowing effectively throughout the engine much more rapidly in cold weather. Again, this results in lower engine wear and longer engine life.

Synthetic Lubricants Offer Superior Thermal Protection

Components requiring lubrication are designed to operate in an optimal temperature range. The demands placed on today’s equipment require more power, greater load-bearing capacity and faster operation. These demands often push the operating temperatures well past the level considered “optimal.” Continued high temperature operation can cause the failure of key components and severe component wear.

Synthetic lubricant molecules are uniformly smooth, allowing them to slip easily over one another. The smooth motion of the molecules allows for a lower coefficient of friction than conventional lubricants. The byproduct of friction is heat. This reduced friction also leads to reduced operating heat within the system. Friction and heat are major contributors to component wear. Through friction control and heat reduction, synthetic lubricants significantly reduce the incidence of component failure and the rate of component wear.

The uniformly sized molecules of synthetic lubricants also make them better heat transfer agents. Petroleum lubricant molecules are not uniformly sized. Some are big and heavy, while others are small and light. As oil flows in a lubricated system, the smaller, lighter molecules tend to flow in the center of the oil stream while the larger, heavier molecules get stuck on the metal surfaces where they create a barrier against the movement of heat from the component into the oil stream. In all actuality, the larger molecules form a blanket around hot components. If the larger molecules are chemically unstable, they may even break down and form deposits on the surface of the component, multiplying the blanketing effect even further.

Due to the molecular uniformity of synthetic lubricants, there are no large molecules to blanket hot components. Instead each molecule is likely to touch the component and thereby more efficiently transfer heat into the oil stream, thus carrying the heat away from the component. Additionally, synthetic lubricants tend to be chemically stable, and are therefore not prone to forming deposits on protected components.

Lubricant viscosity is one of the most critical elements of component efficiency and life expectancy. Viscosity is a measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. If the viscosity of a lubricant is too low, the lubricated component will have inadequate protection and will therefore be subject to excessive wear. If the viscosity of the lubricant is too high, a lubricated component will expend additional energy to complete its task. This additional “effort” will reduce the efficiency of the overall system and may cut short the service life of other components, such as motors.

“Viscosity index” is a number assigned to lubricants that describes how much their viscosity changes with temperature change. A lubricant with a higher viscosity index has demonstrated lower amounts of viscosity change. Lubricants with a high index give better protection and efficiency than their low index counterparts. High viscosity index lubricants are more likely to retain correct viscosity for the specific application, because they resist thickening in cold temperature operation or thinning in high temperature operation.

Synthetic lubricants have higher viscosity indexes than conventional mineral oil lubricants. This contrast is due, in part, to the uniformity of molecules within synthetic lubricants. The larger, heavier molecules traditionally found in mineral oil lubricants tend to increase lubricant viscosity in cold temperatures to a much greater degree than the smaller, lighter molecules of synthetic lubricants. Cold temperature creates a thickening of the mineral oil lubricant within the operating environment. This thickening creates a greater exposure to wear of critical components, especially during startup and a loss of efficiency due to the greater effort required to circulate the thickened lubricant. The effect of temperature on traditional mineral oil lubricants causes them to have a lower viscosity index than the viscosity index of synthetic lubricant alternatives. Synthetic lubricants offer greater protection to critical components operating in extreme temperatures.

Lubricants contain basestocks and additives. The basestock of a lubricant comprises the greatest volume of the finished lubricant. Additives are added to the basestock to either enhance the properties of the basestock or add properties that the basestock does not have.

Additives perform the following functions:

o Protection of metallic surfaces

o Extension of the range of lubricant application and usage

o Prolong lubricant service life

The greatest demand for lubricant additives is found in the area of transportation, where additives are utilized for engines and drivetrains.

The protection of metallic surfaces is accomplished through the use of surface protective additives.

o Antiwear agents inhibit wear

o Rust and corrosion inhibitors inhibit rust and corrosion

o Detergents keep component surfaces free of deposits

o Alkalinity additives neutralize corrosive acids

o Dispersants keep insoluble materials dispersed in the lubricant stream to prevent wear

o Friction modifiers reduce friction between components

The extension of range in a lubricant’s application and usage is accomplished through lubricant applicability extending additives.

o Viscosity modifiers reduce the rate of viscosity change in changing temperatures

o Seal swell agents help form and maintain tight seals

The prolonging of service life in a lubricant is accomplished through the use of lubricant life enhancing additives.

o Antifoam agents prevent lubricant foaming

o Antioxidants prevent lubricant oxidation

Not only are there qualities differences in lubricant basestocks, but there are also differences between additives. For instance, a low quality viscosity modifier can be damaged by the shearing forces within the engine. Once damaged, these additives no longer contribute to high temperature viscosity. This breakdown causes lubricated components to be exposed wear and damage during operation under high temperature conditions.

The quality of a lubricant’s additive is also directly related to its cost. A lubricant that has been formulated for optimal performance contains higher performing additives. These high performance additives are costlier than a lower performing solution. In time the performance designed lubricant becomes more cost effective, because of the superior level of lubrication and engine protection. These factors contribute to increased service life and performance.

The life of a lubricant is also determined by the quality of additives used. An example of this is found with alkalinity additives. For example, in a diesel engine, the lubricant must be replaced when the alkalinity additives are depleted or the engine becomes subject to corrosion, which could lead to engine failure or an accelerated rate of wear. It then would make no sense to combine a long life additive with a short life conventional basestock; however, when used in conjunction with a long life basestock, the additives can lead to reduced oil drains, a reduction in oil disposal and oil consumption. These reductions all contribute to significant cost savings for the vehicle owner.

One of the largest investments a person makes in their lifetime is the purchase of an automobile. With new car prices now averaging well over twenty thousand dollars, it is imperative that vehicle owners go to great lengths to protect their investment. Performing an oil change at regular intervals has always been one of the easiest ways to protect a car owner’s investment.

Engine oil is the life blood of of the modern combustion engine. The most common form of engine oil is petroleum based motor oil. Motor oil creates a lubrication stream that circulates through the engine. Not only does this stream lubricate moving parts thus reducing friction, increasing the overall efficiency of the engine, but it also creates a buffer between moving parts to reduce metal to metal contact and wear.

Over time engine oil loses its lubrication qualities due to thermal breakdown and contamination of the lubrication stream. Petroleum based motor oil often begins to develop sludge and paraffin build up, since paraffin is a standard component of petroleum base stocks. Traditionally manufacturers and mechanics have recommended that an oil change be performed every three months or three thousand miles, whichever came first. The purpose of this frequent interval was to insure that engine oil was always free of contamination and operating at optimum lubrication levels.

Advances In Technology Lead To Synthetic Motor Oil

With advances in engineering and technology, a new breed of engine oil, called synthetic motor oil was developed and initially used in military applications, in particular military jet aircraft. In 1972 synthetic motor oil moved from the highly specialized world of military aircraft to the consumer automotive market, when Amsoil introduced the first synthetic motor oil for consumer vehicle applications. Amsoil was brought to market by A.J. Amatuzio, a jet fighter pilot who realized that the same technology that was keeping fighter aircraft in the air also had great practical application in the civilian automotive market.

Synthetic Motor Oil Outperforms Its Petroleum Based Counterparts

Amsoil was found to outperform its petroleum counterparts in the critical areas of engine oil lubrication. The synthetic did a better job of reducing friction between moving parts creating less engine wear. The synthetic also operated more consistently at wide temperature extremes and also had a longer service life without chemical breakdown.

In the thirty-five plus years since Amsoil first introduced synthetic motor oil to the consumer automobile market, the performance of synthetic oils has continued to see vast improvement. With today’s synthetic technology, a vehicle owner can safely extend oil change intervals as high as every 35,000 miles. Even at such a large interval, the internal components will show less wear than in an identical engine using petroleum based oil changed at the standard three thousand mileĀ  change intervals.

Synthetic motor oil offers today’s vehicle owner the opportunity to maximize the performance and efficiency of their automobile, while at the same time stretching their vehicle maintenance dollar.
